Carol and Carl

My husband and I had long wished to see the Yorkshire Dales after reading the James Herriot books several times. When he discovered the website of Herriot Country Tours and Curlew Barn we were sure we had found what we wanted. We arranged a 10 day tour with Chris and Peter and arrived in late April. The trip  met all our expectations and much much more

The room was very comfortable and the lambs peeking in the window in the early morning was an unexpected bonus. Breakfast was huge and tasty.  The views across the road were spectacular.

We’re from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia so we are used to crooked roads. However our roads are not a single lane with tall stone walls on either side and cars approaching on the “wrong side” of the road so we were very happy to have Peter as our driver as well as our tour guide. His knowledge of the Herriot sites and the history of the areas was wide and entertaining.  The days went by too fast.  Chris was happy to make reservations for dinner at local pubs for us and to drop us off and pick us up. The pubs were fun, the people everywhere were very friendly.

The Tour de Yorkshire went through Bellerby on Saturday . Although the bicycles came past very quickly the whole day had fun things happening, again with very friendly people. We were so glad that the race came through while we were there.

But the most amazing things was Chris insisting on calling a very small church in Winestead to see if we could visit it.  I had discovered that my husband’s family had come from Winestead many years ago. Chris arranged for someone to meet us there to let us in. To our surprise, he turned out to be a distant cousin of my husband! He told us the history of the family and the church and gave us the family pedigree dating back to 1110!  This wouldn’t have happened without Chris’ ability to make things happen.

We hope to come back again and would not hesitate to recommend Herriot Country Tours and Chris and Peter to anyone.
