Alpaca Experience

A relaxing and mindful experience

A wonderful way to spend a couple of relaxing hours

Nestled right in the heart of Herriot Country, on the edge of the gorgeous village of Husthwaite, is Suncliffe Beacon Farm, home to Beacon Alpacas.

Owned by Jacki Barlow for over 15 years, she now has almost 50 beautiful alpacas. Some of Jacki’s Alpacas’ Alpacas have been featured on the Channel 5 programme “The Yorkshire Vet,” which follows the work of local veterinary practices.

Jacki uses the wool from the alpacas for turning into luxurious yarn, soft socks, gloves, hats, scarves and other hand-knitted garments, which she sells in her on-site shop, The Beacon Bothy.

This hypoallergenic nature of alpaca wool allows individuals with sensitive skin or wool allergies to enjoy the warmth, softness, and other beneficial properties of wool without the discomfort and allergic reactions often associated with traditional sheep’s wool.

This is because alpaca wool does not contain lanolin, the natural waxy oil found in sheep’s wool. Lanolin is a common allergen that can cause skin irritation, itching, and other allergic responses in sensitive individuals. The absence of lanolin makes alpaca wool a much gentler option for those with wool sensitivities.

The fibres of alpaca wool are also smoother and finer than those of many traditional wools. This reduced “prickle factor” means the fibres are less likely to irritate the skin, making alpaca comfortable to wear even for people who find other wool itchy.

Paul is delighted to have teamed up with Jacki to offer our guests the opportunity to meet her alpaca herd, including the Cria (alpaca babies!), and take them for a walk. A relaxing and mindful experience walking in the stunning Hambleton Hills of North Yorkshire. These delightful and funny alpacas are halter trained, well-behaved and photogenic! On the walk there will be lots of photo opportunities, and Jacki will explain all about the alpacas and other animals on the farm as you walk. On a clear day the views are stunning, right across the Vale of York and back to the White Horse of Kilburn.

What a wonderful way to spend a couple of relaxing hours at Beacon Alpacas, trekking through the breathtaking Hambleton Hills with those gentle, curious creatures. You’d meet your walking companions for the day, and after a brief introduction and perhaps a few gentle pets, you’d be shown how to hold their lead rope. It’s a connection, a partnership for your walk.

There’s a unique rhythm to walking with an Alpaca. It encourages you to slow down, to truly appreciate the beauty around you. You’re not just on a hike; you’re in the company of these gentle souls, sharing the experience. Their quiet presence is incredibly grounding, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As your couple of hours draws to a close, you will feel a sense of peaceful contentment.

You will carry with you the memory of their gentle nature, the stunning scenery, and the unique joy of sharing that time with such amazing, friendly creatures in the heart of the Hambleton Hills for years to come.
